Sharding (Ethereum) refers to dividing the Ethereum blockchain consensus (validators) into multiple independent groups, each fully capable of adding new blocks to the blockchain.

This upgrade will be implemented as part of the planned Surge series of upgrades. A temporary update in this series, the Dencun Upgrade, has already been rolled out.
